I migrated the blog to Hugo!
Intro
The last 48 hours have been something of a whirlwind for this site. I decided to build it on a whim, arbitrarily chose to run it using Vimwiki, and now I’ve decided to move everything to Hugo.
I don’t really know how Hugo works, so I’ve basically just script-kiddied my way into running my new blog off of it. I’m not proud of this. In a more perfect world where I had more time in my life, I could have poured over the Hugo documentation until I really groked it. I could have made my 2nd blog entry an exciting and detailed report of my thought process in how I organized and configured everything.
Instead, the world I live in contains 2 kids under the age of 5 3 young kids whose well-being and upbringing is my responsibility. I also work a full time job and own a house which I have to maintain. I’m not complaining about any of this, mind. Just explaining where all of my time goes…
The migration
Anyway, here is my lame account of migrating to Hugo:
- Find a Hugo theme I liked. I went with PaperMod because it was simple and supported tables of contents and syntax highlighting.
- Loosely follow and hack the sample config file from PaperMod’s installation tutorial.
- Manually convert the huge archive of Vimwiki posts to markdown.
- Build the site and iterate till it looks mostly right.
And there you have it! The blog looks pretty good for < 5 hours of effort. Maybe someday I’ll actually learn how it works.
